Eliminating Waste is a Serious Matter

FEELING sluggish and lethargic? Bothered by recurrent colds, flu, dull skin and the occasional breakout of pimples? These are all signs that you need to support your body's elimination system.

Waste matter is eliminated from the body through the liver, kidneys, skin, bowels and lungs. The clearance system can become overloaded when flooded with toxins.

Sources of toxins are from pesticides, food additives, agricultural contaminants in meat, crops, dairy products, heavy metals in fish, air and water pollutants.

Our body also produces toxins from the breakdown of food. If food is not properly digested, it will encourage the growth of harmful bacteria and yeast, which also release their toxic by-products.

Regular detoxification programmes can help to maintain health and deal with chronic conditions.

There are many different types of detox programmes and they vary according to the needs of the individual. They all share the same objective - to flush out toxins, restore nutrients requirements and support the body's eliminating systems.

Avoid adding more toxins to the system. This calls for the avoidance of caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, processed food with additives, flavourings and refined sugar.

The diet should incorporate fresh, whole organic food, greens, multi- coloured fruits, plenty of purified water, lean meat (such as chicken or turkey breast) and whole grain.

A high-fibre diet increases both the frequency and quantity of bowel movements and decreases the absorption of toxins from waste products. For quick and temporary relief of constipation, herbs like cascara and marshmallow are gentle-acting laxatives.

Toxins produced by harmful bacteria and yeast in the gut lead to bloating, candida (yeast) infection, gas, diarrhoea and/or constipation, allergies, skin conditions and a host of other problems.

It is important then to get rid of these troublemakers by re-balancing gut flora with probiotics supplement.

Probiotics are live microbial food supplements that confer health benefits to the host by preventing and suppressing populations of harmful bacteria, aid in digestion of food, lowers cholesterol and manufactures many vitamins including the B-complex vitamins, vitamin A and vitamin K.

The Lactobacillus strains help to digest proteins and lactose, which are of great benefit to those who have lactose intolerance to dairy products.

Some of the friendly bacteria like the Bifidobacteria strains are able to break down harmful toxins in the gut that may cause cancer.

To facilitate the detoxification processes within the liver, it is necessary to reduce liver overload and encourage recovery and healing in the liver.

Nutrition and herbs can play an important role in keeping the liver healthy and prevent it from damage.

Anti-free radical nutrients such as beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, zinc and selenium protect the liver cells from free radical damage.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can destroy cellular structures unless they are effectively mopped up.

The most potent liver protective herb is milk thistle (Silybum marianum) containing a mixture of antioxidants collectively referred to as silymarin.

Fat-soluble waste products are usually eliminated from the body via bile. Human and animal studies both have shown that dandelion (Taraxecum officinale) has a direct effect on the liver by increasing the flow of bile, thus aiding in better removal of toxins.

Dandelion is usually combined with milk thistle for improved liver functions.

Tips to enhance detoxification:

* Reduce dairy products, animal meat and avoid junk food. Add more fresh organic fruits and vegetables as they contain fibre that help us eliminate toxins naturally.

* Drink more fluids, particularly purified water and fresh-squeezed juices. They help flush toxins from your body.

* Try a liquid diet - broths, clear soups, water and juices - for a full day once a week.

* Drink herbal teas like green tea and peppermint to promote urination and elimination of faeces.

* Regular bowel movements help prevent toxins from building up in the digestive tract.

* Take a steam bath, sit in a sauna or get a massage to loosen toxins from fat cells and move them out of your body.

* Relax or meditate at least five minutes each day.

* Exercise to improve better blood and lymph circulation to eliminate toxins through the skin and lungs.

Don't Panic

HAVE you experienced a sudden overwhelming fear, or an intense feeling of anxiety without any real threat or danger? If you have, then you may be suffering from panic attack.

Millions of people including physically and mentally healthy people have experienced this terrifying feeling of losing control, going insane or dying, gripped by fear and panic. Whether it is a one time event or a recurring episode, sufferers can be profoundly affected by it.

Panic attacks can be a frightening experience. In the primitive sense, they are a downward spiral of anxiety which leaves the victim and those around bewildered and unable to help.

On the other hand you can recognise and treat these attacks instead of continuing to be a victim of it.

The first step is to recognise an attack so you can manage and treat them. Identifying the symptoms can lessen the chance of this attack recurring.

Since panic attacks are likely to occur in the same situation and circumstances, knowing what to look for and what to do can be helpful in managing and preventing future attacks.

For most people, relaxation techniques, such as taking deep, slow breaths, have been beneficial to manage this temporary moments of anxiety.

Those prone to panic attacks should avoid stimulants such as nicotine and coffee. The caffeine in coffee and nicotine in cigarettes can raise your heart rate. By avoiding coffee, tea, soda, and other products high in caffeine you may be able to avoid triggering a panic attack.

Stress can also raise your anxiety level which leads to an attack. A healthy way to de-stress and lower your anxiety level is through exercise which releases endorphins into your bloodstream, which gives you a natural "high" to help reduce stress and decrease anxiety.

It is also important to learn how to handle negative thoughts as our thoughts often become our actions.

There are many types of medication available for panic attacks, however prescription medication is commonly overused and should be taken only as the last resort. Some work as long as the person is on medication, and has side effects.

As soon as their prescription is done, the panic attacks may return and so do the symptoms.

By identifying the circumstances that lead to panic attacks and learning how to respond to those situations appropriately, panic attacks can be lessened or eliminated over time. As with most things, treating, managing and overcoming your anxiety takes time.

WHAT IS PANIC DISORDER?

Put yourself in the following situation. You're speeding along a highway when suddenly a small animal crosses in front of you. You pull the steering wheel hard trying to avoid the animal. The car swerves and spins off into the emergency lane and you skid to a stop. Somehow you've managed to avoid a potentially fatal accident - for both you and the animal.

You're shaking, your heart is racing, and you've broken out into a quick and cold sweat. But you're alive! This would be the normal reaction for most people in a similar situation.

Now imagine this. You're at a restaurant having a quiet dinner when suddenly, for no apparent reason, you experience the same uneasy feelings. You begin shaking, your heart starts racing, and you break out into a cold sweat. You even feel like you might be having a heart attack. You're rushed to the hospital and the doctors can find nothing immediately wrong with you. What has happened?

Quite possibly you may have experienced a "panic attack" - and a few of the typical symptoms usually associated with Panic Disorder.

Panic Disorder is characterised by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms that may include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or abdominal distress.

A panic attack seems to come out of nowhere - at times and in places where there is nothing to fear. When experiencing the effects of the attack, you may think you're having a heart attack, dying, or even going crazy. But in reality, there is nothing wrong with your heart, or your sanity. You're simply one of the millions who suffer from this frightening and debilitating disorder.

WHAT IS AGORAPHOBIA?

SOME Panic Disorder sufferers also have "agoraphobia." Agoraphobia is an anxiety, or a fear, of being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or in which help may not be available in the event of having a Panic Attack or panic-like symptoms (for example, fear of having a sudden attack of dizziness or a sudden attack of diarrhoea). Some people with agoraphobia may fear being outside the home alone; being in a crowd or standing in a line; being on a bridge; or travelling in a bus, train, or car.

Situations like these may be avoided or else they're dreaded, and then endured. Typically this means staying away from places or circumstances where previous experiences have happened. Obviously, having such a "fear of the fear" can make normal everyday life impossible.

WHAT CAUSES PANIC DISORDER?

AT one time, Panic Disorder was believed to have stemmed from "psychological problems." However, researchers now believe that Panic Disorder is a real and treatable medical illness caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. It is a disorder that can also sometimes be accompanied by depression.

Contrary to an older, common belief, Panic Disorder is not due to a "character flaw" or "character weakness." Panic Disorder is a real medical illness that is treatable.

Biologically, it appears that emotional memories stored in specific parts of the brain may play a role in disorders involving very distinct fears, like phobias, while other parts may be involved in other forms of anxiety.

Some researchers suggest that Panic Disorder may be caused by an imbalance of specific chemicals in the brain. Three of these chemicals are called norepinephrine, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), and serotonin. It is believed that changes in the levels of these chemicals play a role in anxiety disorder.

Panic Disorder appears to run in families and is more common in women than in men. Genetic factors or changes in body chemistry, combined with stress, may also play an important role. Certain illnesses, drugs, and certain social situations - or even substances like caffeine - may also contribute to triggering attacks.

TIPS

HOW TO DEAL WITH PANIC ATTACKS

* Recognise you are having a panic attack. Tell yourself everything will be OK.

* Prepare yourself for what will happen, so when it does, you will comprehend what is going on.

* The symptoms include shortness of breath. Try to breathe deeply and regulate your breathing as this will help you to control the panic attack.

* Sit down, as standing can be dangerous if you feel dizzy and feel like falling or collapsing.

* Grip or hold onto something solid, to increase your stability.

* Get help from a friend, or family members. Simply ask them to be around.

* Try to distract yourself. Calm, soothing thoughts can distract you from a panic situation.

* After an attack subsides, relax for a few minutes. Drink some water and take a break If the situation persists, get professional help.

THE real secret to great skin may be in the wet market and not in a department store's beauty floor, writes SYIDA LIZTA AMIRUL IHSAN.

COSMETICS companies would like you to believe that what you use on your face determines the condition of your skin. But in reality, it's what you eat that has an even greater effect on your skin.

"A healthy diet leads to healthy skin. Some people may be 40 and look 30. Expensive facial products can help to a certain extent, but a healthy diet is paramount to achieving good skin," says Imperial Medical Centre cosmetic doctor Dr Abrizah Ousman.

The golden rule is to eat a balanced diet - this means complex carbohydrates (whole grains like brown rice), vegetables and fruits (lots of them), fish (and lean meat) and nuts and legumes.

But fresh produce in the wet market don't come with clinical trials to convince you that they work.

"We are what we eat. This applies, most of all, to our skin, the biggest organ in our body that protects us from the environment and gives us our looks or appearances. Eating well and keeping our skin hydrated is important because skin needs moisture and plenty of good nutrition and antioxidants," explains Dr Abrizah.

Here's some food for great skin.

Water

"Our skin rejoices when it's hydrated well. When we are properly hydrated, we all sweat more efficiently and this makes our skin clean and clear as well," adds Dr Abrizah.

"The amount of water an adult needs varies according to climate and amount of exercise one gets.

"General dietary recommendations suggest that men drink about three litres of liquids a day and women about 2.2 litres daily. But plain water is the best beverage - it's cheap and has zero calories," she says.

On the contrary, soda gives you empty calories with water. Also, alcohol and coffee are diuretics - they strip skin of moisture.

Berries, vegetables and fruits

The top five scores of antioxidant properties in food go to acai berries, prunes, pomegranates, raisins or dark grapes and blueberries. But what does that mean?

Dr Abrizah explains that foods enriched with antioxidants are best for the skin as they can slow down the ageing process, which shows up as skin laxity, wrinkles and dark circles.

"Antioxidants are substances that can protect skin cells from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals and harmful effect of UV lights.

"Powerful antioxidants are vitamin A, C and E. Vitamin A help in cell turnover and renewal so your skin stays smooth and less wrinkly. Carotenoids help make skin less sensitive to sun. Vitamin C helps build collagen and elastin," she adds.

Green leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, squash and tomato supply enough amounts of antioxidants.

Colourful fruits such as mangoes, melons, berries and apricots are great too.

"Avocado, asparagus, almond, hazelnut, sunflower seed, egg and milk are good sources of vitamin E. The top layers of skin contain high levels of this vitamin which support the guard cells that protect skin."

Dark chocolate

Dr Abrizah reminds us that when chocolate is referred to for its benefits, it applies only to dark chocolate.

"A study carried out in Italy's National Institute for Food and Nutrition Research in Rome showed that eating dark chocolate - but not milk chocolate or dark chocolate eaten with milk - can lower blood pressure and protect the skin from harmful UV effects," she says.

Dark chocolate comes from the cacao plant, rich in flavanols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The amount of flavonoids varies from one type of chocolate to another, but here's a guide you can follow: The more non-fat cocoa solids in a chocolate product, the more antioxidants it likely contains.

So which type of chocolate has the most flavonoids?

"The highest levels are in natural cocoa powder (not Dutch cocoa, though, because it is alkalised cocoa).

"The second highest in flavonoids is unsweetened baking chocolate. Dark chocolate and semisweet chocolate chips rank third, with milk chocolate and chocolate syrup at the bottom of the list," she adds.

Salmon

This and other oily fishes like sardines, tuna, herring, mackerel, black cod and bluefish; and even walnuts, canola oil, and flax seed deliver essential fatty acids - omega 3.

Essential fatty acids are responsible for healthy cell membranes because cell membranes hold water in, Dr Abrizah says.

"So the stronger that barrier becomes, the better your cells can hold moisture. And that means plumper, younger-looking skin," she stresses.

Green tea

According to a medical website, green tea "deserves a category all its own in any article about foods for healthy skin because the skin-health properties in this beneficial drink just can't be beaten."

Dr Abrizah agrees. "Green tea has anti-inflammatory properties as research shows that it can reduce risk of skin cancer and protect against UV rays. The best is herbal green tea. When milk is added, then the benefits are reduced."

Whole wheat bread

Whole wheat bread, oatmeal, cereals, turkey, tuna and Brazil nuts all have selenium, essential food for healthy skin.

Dr Abrizah says studies have shown that selenium plays a key role in the health of skin cells.

"Selenium has anti-inflammatory properties. Even sun damaged skin may suffer fewer consequences if selenium levels are high," she says.

Low-fat dairy products

Low-fat yoghurt, for example, is not only high in vitamin A, but also acidophilus, the "live" bacteria that is good for intestinal health and has an impact on the skin.

"One of the most important components of skin health is vitamin A. One of the best sources to get it is from low-fat dairy products. In fact, experts say that the health of our skin cells is dependent on dietary vitamin A," adds Dr Abrizah.

EAT FOR YOU SKIN

* If you want fewer wrinkles, eat more oily fish like salmon, nuts, and eggs fortified with omega-3.

* If you want clearer skin and better complexion, eat more whole wheat and whole grains that prevent constipation and stabilise your blood sugar. This in turn helps to lower androgen production, which helps minimise acne.

* If you want hydrated skin, drink just plain water. It provides internal hydration to skin and a cream would lock that moisture in.

* If you want healthy, glowing skin, zinc and iron from lean meat, fortified cereal and poultry (skinned) help in cell production and oxygenation.

* Combining good nutrition with a sensible exercise programme and plenty of rest can make an enormous difference in your overall skin health.

WHAT NOT TO CONSUME

Q: What are some of the foods that one must totally avoid or eat sparingly?

A: Junk food and food with high content of trans fatty acids. The former, due to its high sodium content, and the latter, due to its harmful effect on our cardiovascular system.

Q: Why is processed food bad for the skin?

A: They have high salt content and omega-6 polyunsaturated oils and trans fats with little or no nutritional value.

Too much of these oils provoke and stimulate inflammation, accelerate ageing and cause all sorts of skin problems including greasy or large pores, acne, dry, flaky skin, dehydration or premature ageing.

Q: Are there other effects on the skin caused by excessive salt intake?

A: The high salt content has a counter-effect to drinking water leading to dehydration. Dehydrated skin is weak and fragile, the end result being wrinkly skin and coarse texture.

Also, most processed foods are filled with sugars, additives, preservatives, colourings and artificial flavours.

All these are converted into sugar which lead to surge of insulin and the stress hormone, cortisol.

A high level of insulin pushes your cellular metabolism into producing all sorts of inflammatory chemicals.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – Learn to Save Lives

IMAGINE this. You are having dinner with your loved ones and suddenly your mother complain of chest pains and before you knew it, she collapses and stops breathing. You become panic and start calling for help. If only you knew Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), you would have saved her life.

CPR is a combination of rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) and chest compressions. If someone isn't breathing or if the blood is not circulating adequately, CPR can restore circulation of oxygen-rich blood to the brain. Without oxygen, permanent brain damage or death can occur in less than eight minutes and defibrillation occurs during that time. It’s a simple procedure, and yet many do not know how to perform CPR.

There is a critical need for at least one family member to be a trained first aider. More lives can be saved if family members have some basic first aid and CPR knowledge. They should learn how to conduct first-aid and CPR and be prepared for any emergency situation while waiting for help to come. Imagine saving a person’s life by performing a simple medical procedure that we can easily learn. Learning the correct technique and administering it as quickly as possible will give their loved ones a chance of recovery.

CPR may be necessary during emergencies such as heart attack , accidents, near-drowning, suffocation, poisoning, smoke inhalation, electrocution injuries, and suspected sudden infant death syndrome (Sids)

CPR is recognised worldwide as a first aid procedure that can increase a person’s chances of survival while waiting for proper medical assistance.

The procedure involves a combination of chest compression and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation that keeps oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until medical treatment can restore a normal heart rhythm.

Many Malaysians have no idea on how to administer CPR. There are documented cases of lives being saved by CPR. If CPR is started within four minutes after a person collapses, he or she has a 40 per cent chance of survival. The brain is the most sensitive part of the body. When the heart stops functioning, the victim lose consciousness due to lack of oxygen. The victim’s brain may survive without oxygen for 10 minutes, and this is why it is important to start resuscitation as soon as possible after breathing or the heart has stopped, whatever the cause so that the brain may not suffer permanent damage. Administering CPR and getting the blood to start pumping through his or her heart and brain may prevent brain damage and save the victim's life.

The problem of cardiac arrest, which happens when the heart stops pumping blood, can be caused by a heart attack, drowning, electric shock and other problems. About 80 per cent of these tragedies happen at home. Medical assistance may only arrive minutes or hours later, thus it is crucial that CPR is performed to increase the victim’s chances of survival. Without help, the victim’s chances decrease by 10 per cent each minute. Less than seven per cent of cardiac arrest victims survive before reaching hospital because the vast majority of those witnessing the cardiac arrest do not know how to perform a CPR.

International and local research has shown that most people do not know how to perform CPR. More shockingly, 45 per cent of physicians and 80 per cent of nurses are unwilling to perform it for various reasons, including the fear of doing it wrongly, distaste for the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and fear of contracting disease from the victim.

In Malaysia, a study done in 2005 on first aid and CPR among health personnel revealed that even among trained healthcare workers, only 50 per cent are confident they can perform the CPR.

Three simple steps that can save a person's life is as simple and as easy as ABC.

Follow these basic steps and remember to call for emergency medical assistance before doing the CPR and it could save the life of the person who has collapsed

A is for Airway. Tilt the head to open the airway and lift the chin as this moves the tongue from the back of the throat. The tongue is the most common airway obstruction in an unconscious person. If he can breathe on his own, then it's important to clear the airway. Look, listen and feel for a faint indication that your victim is breathing.

B is for Breathing. Give the victim two breaths. Pinch the victim's nose, put your lips over the other person's lips and blow until you see the chest rise. Make sure you blow just enough to see the chest rise.

C is for Compression. Find the carotid artery to the side of the Adam's apple area and feel for five or 10 seconds. If there is no pulse, begin chest compressions.

Feel around in the chest area. If there is no thumping under your fingers within three seconds, span, begin chest compressions. Locate the base of the sternum - the spot where all the ribs come together in the centre of the chest. Place the heel of your hand in the middle of the victim's chest. Put the other hand on top of the first with fingers interlaced, lock elbows and compress the victim's chest, using your body weight, to the necessary depth of 4-5cm (2 in.) deep. Compress the chest at a rate equal to 100/minute. Perform 15 compressions at this rate.

Count aloud as you compress 15 times. Give the victim two breaths. That's cycle No. 1. Repeat for a total of five cycles - about one minute in elapsed time.

Check again in the neck for a pulse and watch for signs that the person is breathing. Keep going until help arrives.

However the new guidelines of the American Heart Association 2010 emphasised compression first. Instead of ABC it is now CAB except for babies. If you are not trained in CPR, continue to do chest compressions until help arrives or the victim wakes up. It's normal to feel pops and snaps when you first begin chest compressions - DON'T STOP! You're not going to make the victim worse.

Detoxification Improve yourself and your Lifestyle

The human detoxification system consists of the respiratory (lungs, bronchial tubes, sinus and nose), gastrointestinal (liver, gall bladder, colon), urinary (kidney, bladder, urethra), skin and dermal (sweat, sebaceous glands and tears) and lymphatic (lymph nodes and channels) systems.

Here are some components of a detoxification programme:

Water is the main detoxifying agent in our body. It helps to clean our skin and kidneys, and improve sweating through exercise. Many of us are chronically dehydrated, and doctors recommend a minimum of eight glasses of water daily.

The next step is raw-food diet, this means consumption of more fruits and vegetables and less of proteins and fat rich red meat, milk products, refined food and fried food. Adding fiber to your diet will aid to detoxify your system regularly.

Another important component of detoxification is regular exercise. Exercise relieves toxins from the body by sweating and also helps in good bowel habits. Exercise improves our general metabolism.

Regular bathing also facilitates the body to get rid of toxins that accumulate on the skin, and opens the pores. Saunas and oil massages further help the body to cleanse completely.

By taking part in a detoxification diet program, one can effectively restore their health to an optimal level. When the body can eliminate toxins, then health is restored, and energy and vigor are revitalised.

Any program that supplements detoxification will improve health and are encouraged. Other factors that must be considered in detoxification are: nutrition, water, exercise, rest, sunshine, and fresh air. Overall detox diets can improve health and well being, just do your part to research which diet will work best for you.

Earth Hour 2011: Growing Beyond the Hour: Pledge to "Live Green"

Each month, a simple action towards a more sustainable lifestyle will be highlighted at wwf.org.my. For example, individuals can pledge to switch off their TV and computer, instead of leaving these in standby mode.

"WWF-Malaysia hopes that Malaysians will join the global community this Earth Hour to take action that goes beyond the hour. It is easy to "Live Green: One switch at a time", and the more people who make this pledge, the more powerful our efforts to protect our living planet become," said WWF-Malaysia Executive Director/CEO Dato' Dr Dionysius Sharma.

From its inception as a single-city initiative in 2007, Earth Hour has grown into a global movement where hundreds of millions of people from every continent join together to acknowledge the importance of protecting our planet.

Earth Hour 2011 will ask Malaysians to:

Switch off your lights for Earth Hour at 8.30pm, Saturday 26 March 2011 and celebrate your commitment to the planet with the people of the world
Sign up at wwf.org.my and pledge to "Live Green: One switch at a time."
Sustain your actions beyond the hour

Earth Hour 2010 was the largest voluntary action for the environment in history with lights going out across 128 countries and over 4,500 cities worldwide. Earth Hour 2011 will again see hundreds of millions of people across all continents come together to celebrate an unambiguous commitment to the planet by switching off their lights for one designated hour.

The countdown to Earth Hour 2011 has begun, the iconic "lights out" event that has seen some of the world's most recognized landmarks, including the KLCC Twin Towers, KL Tower, Forbidden City, Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, Golden Gate Bridge, Table Mountain, Christ the Redeemer statue and Sydney Opera House switch off in a global celebration of the one thing that unites us all - the planet.

About Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a global initiative in partnership with WWF. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities are invited to turn out their lights for one hour on Saturday March 26, 2011 at 8:30 PM to show their support for environmentally sustainable action. The event began in Sydney in 2007, when 2 million people switched off their lights.
